TOP-DOWN PROCESSING THEORY BY RICHARD GREGORY 1970: The theory that perception is a hypothesis based on past experiences and prior knowledge. Gregory argues that about 90% of visual information is lost by the time it arrives to the brain for processing; which leads to the creation of a perceptual hypothesis about the stimulus. This can result in the brain creating incorrect hypotheses leading to errors of perception. In this case, the brain incorrectly processes PARIS IN THE THE SPRING as PARIS IN THE SPRING as we have prior knowledge that a noun generally follows a determiner.
